Matthew Olsz

My work is rooted in the simplicity and power of abstract lines. Each composition begins with a single stroke, unfolding into an abstract face that captures the unseen weight of feeling and the layered complexity of human emotion. I am drawn to the tension between minimalism and depth. How a group of lines carefully creating shapes can reveal expression, vulnerability, and strength.
These faces are not portraits in the traditional sense but reflections of inner states. They suggest fragments of memory, fleeting expressions and the hidden layers of identity. By stripping away excess detail, I aim to create space for viewers to project their own emotions and narratives onto the work, finding something familiar within the abstraction.
Ultimately, my practice is about connection between line and form, between abstraction and recognition, and between the viewer and the self.

Matthew Olsz
I developed a passion for art at an early age, studying at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago at age eight in 1987 to 1998. Then earning a B.A. in Graphic Design from Columbia College Chicago in 2002 and working as a Graphic Designer, Art Director, Creative Director with Ad Agencies and Design Firms.
A lifelong doodler, my work focuses on the expressive power of abstract lines and the emotional depth of the human face. Drawing inspiration from icons like Basquiat, Picasso, and Ralph Steadman, I explore raw feeling through bold visual language. I currently live and create in South Florida, where I continue to evolve my craft.
